CUNY Citizenship Now! provides free, high quality, and confidential immigration law services to help individuals and families on their path to U.S. citizenship. Our attorneys and paralegals offer one-on-one consultations to assess participants’ eligibility for legal benefits and assist them in applying when qualified. In addition to providing consultations and application assistance to the immigrant community at our centers and council member sites, we regularly hold Citizenship Events in all five boroughs to assist members of the community with citizenship and naturalization issues.
Reporting to the Coordinating Attorney – City Council Program, the Staff Attorney for New York City sites will provide consultations on immigration-related issues and application assistance at New York City Council member sites, and events. The attorney will primarily focus on citizenship, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Advance Parole for DACA and TPS beneficiaries, Renewal/Replacement of Green Card, and Replacement of Citizenship/Naturalization Certificates.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Counsels participants on all immigration law and related issues
Assists participants in the completion and review of application/petitions
Reviews and authorizes release of applications and petitions completed by paralegal staff
Ensures that staff and volunteers are complying with work policies and procedures
Conducts immigration workshops and seminars to benefit staff, participants, and targeted communities
Interprets immigration laws, rulings, and regulations for staff and community partners
Analyzes complex immigration case types eg. criminal convictions and fraud
Ensures data and reports are compiled on the services rendered
Reports regularly to senior staff on the provision of services and outreach to the community
Additional Duties May Include:
Conducting immigration workshops and seminars to benefit staff, participants, and targeted communities
Willingness to work on weekends and/ or occasional evenings
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
J.D. and State Bar admission
Some immigration experience and/or passion about immigrant issues preferred
Second language requirement is preferably for Spanish or Haitian Creole.
Excellent supervisory skills including the ability to oversee and guide the work product and professional development of supervised staff and volunteers
Ability to work in an open environment with limited privacy
Excellent communications, interpersonal, writing and legal writing skills; customer service focus
Flexibility, self-motivation and the ability to motivate others
Ability to work independently as well as with a team in order to further the mission of CCN!
Willing to work on weekends and evenings if necessary
