The Kathrine R. Everett Law Library seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Director for Public Services (ADPS). The ADPS is responsible for supervising reference, interlibrary loan, and circulation operations and staff. The ADPS oversees all library research instruction, including developing the curriculum for Advanced Legal Research (ALR) courses and providing feedback and mentoring to librarians who teach ALR. Instructional responsibilities not related to courses for credit may include conducting research classes and library tours for faculty, staff, students, and other library users. These responsibilities require professional judgment and a clear understanding of the mission of the law library, which supports students, faculty, the University, and the state.
The ADPS oversees the Faculty Liaison Program, the law library’s faculty research service (LibRA), and the library’s support for faculty conducting empirical research. The ADPS prepares reports, trains new public services personnel, participates in collection development, and coordinates all public services publications including research guides. The ADPS also oversees development and implementation of the library’s use of social media. The ADPS provides leadership for reference librarian engagement with the law school and law school faculty and encourages professional development of reference librarians and public services staff. The ADPS will be active in law and/or library professional organizations and will contribute to the advancement of law or library practice through scholarship.
The ADPS joins the Director, the Deputy Director, and the Assistant Director for Collection and Technology Services to form the law library’s Management Team. As a member of the Management Team, the Assistant Director for Public Services contributes expertise in legal research instruction pedagogy and helps shape the overall vision for library services. The ADPS also engages collaboratively with counterparts in other UNC campus libraries, in the Triangle Research Libraries Network, and with other law libraries with similar missions. The ADPS supervises six librarians, on part-time and two full-time staff members, a graduate assistant and other student assistants, as well as the work of other librarians and staff who provide public services. The ADPS reports to the Deputy Director of the law library.
This appointment is governed by the Law Librarian Ranking Plan, which provides terms for multi-year contracts, reappointments, and promotions. This ranking plan supports general faculty status for UNC-CH law librarians. The successful candidate may be nominated by the Director for a secondary appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and for teaching courses in the School of Law as an overload activity. UNC-CH law librarians with clinical law faculty appointments currently enjoy privileges and responsibilities of non-tenure track law faculty including attendance at faculty meetings and limited voting rights, appointment to faculty committees, and participation in a broad spectrum of faculty activities.
Minimum three years of law library reference librarian experience; Knowledge of legal research and legal publication trends; Organizational ability and management skills and ability to work as part of a team;Consultative style of management; Ability to interact positively with students, staff, faculty, and the public; Successful experience teaching legal research in the context of a law school course; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Commitment to collegiality and service; and Demonstrated commitment to the law library profession through active engagement in library associations and/or publications.
Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from A.L.A. accredited library or information school and Juris Doctor from A.B.A. accredited law school required. All required degrees must be conferred by accredited institution prior to the employee’s start date.
