We seek a Manager/US Immigration Associate to work as part of our Toronto team, with experience providing excellent client service in relation to petitions and consular and port of entry applications. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills; have a strong understanding of US immigration and nationality law; in-depth knowledge of immigration processes and procedures at US consulates and ports of entry; and demonstrated experience in dealing directly with corporate applicants and government agencies. Also, experience is required in delegating, coaching and leading a team of Paralegals/Case Workers.
Key job duties include:
Reviewing requests for US employment-based visas and providing sound assessments of eligibility;
Communicating with visa applicants, corporate clients and relocation specialists to provide clear guidance on visa processes and requirements and identifying information required for submissions;
Working with legal team to prepare immigration forms, persuasive letters of support and other submissions;
Keeping abreast of changes in US immigration law and procedure and implementing changes into practice;
Reporting to clients on pending matters and monitoring progress of cases to ensure timely visa issuance and admission to the US;
Resolving issues of eligibility and inadmissibility with consular or immigration officials; and
Other related client management activities.
Manage resources within the team to deliver work in line with immediate and longer term client requirement
Monitor and manage the team member’s performance and caseload.
Train, develop and coach team members through one on ones, team meetings and technical training.
Key job requirements include:
US immigration license; Canadian bar admission is also an asset;
A minimum of five years of experience as an immigration lawyer (post bar admission);
A minimum of 1 year managing a team of Paralegals.
In-depth knowledge of US immigration and nationality law, processes and procedures;
Ability to identify legal issues, analyze facts and determine appropriate case strategy;
Strong written and verbal communication skills;
Experience with high-volume, corporate clientele and managing a wide-ranging case load in a fast-paced environment;
Ability to build strong working relationships with clients and staff;
Ability to effectively utilize on-line case management and legal research tools;
Willingness to contribute to the Firm’s overall initiatives; and
Ability to display professionalism, quality service and a “positive” attitude.
