Purpose of position: The reference librarian will be part of the Tarlton Law Library's public services staff and will participate in a variety of the library's functions, including providing reference services and faculty research support, classroom teaching and other instructional activities.
Essential functions: Provide reference service to students and staff of the law school, as well as to the university community at large, members of the bar, and the general public. Provide research and reference services to law school faculty through the library's liaison program. Participate in teaching basic and advanced legal research. Assist in the development of instruction and outreach programs that educate students on legal research strategies and sources. Participate in the library's orientation programs, conduct tours, and offer instructional sessions. The schedule for this position is Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00am - 6:00pm, with one late shift (11am - 8pm) per week during the academic year.
Required qualifications: A master's degree in Library or Information Science (MLS or equivalent degree) from an accredited program and a JD from an ABA-accredited law school are required; degrees must be completed by start date of employment. One year of experience working in a law library. Knowledge of legal research techniques, sources, and formats is required. Applicants must have a strong service orientation, must be interested in innovation, and must be able to contribute to continual efforts to improve the delivery of legal information. Applicants must be able to contribute positively to an active department that serves diverse communities in many different ways. Applicants must have a professional demeanor, strong interpersonal skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience and one to three years of professional experience in an academic law library.
