The Washington DC office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the world’s leading and largest intellectual property law firms, is seeking a Litigation Support Services Director.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Litigation Support Services Director will be instrumental in the development and implementation of strategies for litigation case and docket management, trial support and e-discovery services. The Director works closely with litigation partners and firm leadership to develop, refine, and execute the firm’s vision and strategy for high quality litigation support services. This position requires an experienced and motivated professional who is a proven innovative leader and manager, expected to develop a cohesive, high-performing team of case managers, functional managers, legal assistants and e-discovery specialists. There is frequent contact with firm management, partners, other administrative departments, as well as contractors and vendors to help achieve practice profitability and cost-effective support services for the litigation practice, aligned to meet client and business needs.
Responsibilities include: developing strategies and operational plans for litigation support services, including litigation legal assistance, e-discovery, trial support, case management, litigation docketing, contract services and vendor management; managing strategy execution and measuring results; analyzing department performance and searches for avenues to increase efficiency and profitability; working with attorneys, chief operating officer, and other administrative managers to develop and implement best practices and business process improvement programs; developing and overseeing department operating and capital budgets and performing detailed financial analysis; offering cost-effective management for contracted services and vendor services; tracking trends in the legal and professional services sectors, monitoring success rate and implementing best practices as appropriate; guiding the planning of effective e-discovery, case and document management; guiding training delivery and measurement of training as needed; leading, directing and managing case managers, litigation legal assistants and clerks, e-discovery staff, functional managers, including monitoring staff workflow to ensure that workloads are appropriately weighted and balanced; providing an analysis of department staffing, trial support, work distribution, and overtime; participating in interviewing, onboarding, training and cross-training of staff and providing continuing education on policies and trends relating to litigation issues.
Successful candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree or JD preferred, at least ten years of management experience at an AmLaw 200 firm or national vendor in this space with a background in developing and implementing comprehensive litigation department strategies and programs, demonstrated experience with litigation support software (i.e., Relativity, Concordance, IPRO, LiveNote, CaseMap, TimeMap, DTSearch), and other similar litigation support software, and advanced Microsoft Office skills.
Must have excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive and difficult situations with ease, strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to synthesize complex data. Strong project management abilities including setting priorities, planning, organization, follow-through, delegation, and negotiation skills is required.
