Stetson University College of Law is seeking a creative and collaborative leader to be its next Law Library Director. The successful candidate will be responsible for the directorship of the Dolly & Homer Hand Law Library, fostering academic excellence and innovation throughout the Law Library and College of Law. The Law Library Director should be someone who can encourage, support, and advocate a strong role for the library in dynamic teaching and support of the law school curriculum and programs. Academic law libraries are facing dramatic challenges, including rapidly changing information technologies and research methods. But with challenges come opportunities for change and groundbreaking ideas. The College of Law seeks a Law Library Director who will embrace these challenges with vision, adaptability, and innovation.
The Law Library Director should be someone who not only has a vision for the Law Library, but who has an understanding of its relationship to the Law School and the University more broadly, reflecting the library’s crucial role in shaping the future of legal education. The Director should also be someone who is committed to promoting an atmosphere of openness in the Law Library and in fostering a strong connection with and among its students in serving as a center for further student learning and engagement. In addition to being familiar with contemporary trends in legal education, the ideal candidate must possess an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of the evolving roles of academic law libraries in legal education, be familiar with emergent technologies for identifying, accessing, organizing, and interacting with knowledge and information, and be comfortable promoting technologies for enhancing student engagement and learning. Additionally, the ideal candidate would demonstrate effective, collaborative leadership; possess excellent communication and teaching skills; practice solid fiscal responsibility and management; have a track record of successfully securing external funding; possess a record of scholarly and professional achievement and contribution; and have a history of implementing technological innovations that advance the institution’s core commitments to engaged learning and teaching, research, and service. The ability to make active and original contributions to the College of Law’s mission is essential.
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and a MLS/MLIS, or equivalent degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited school.
Demonstrated ability or potential to engage in publication and professional service to meet University tenure and promotion requirements.
Knowledge of best practices, issues, and trends in academic law libraries, including trends in legal research, teaching, and learning.
Knowledge of library technologies, including current ILS platforms, preferably Innovative Interfaces, Inc.
Prefer significant senior-level administrative experience in an academic law library.
Extensive experience successfully managing a law library budget.
Demonstrate strong written and oral communication, marketing, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, assessment, and administrative skills.
Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
Demonstrate a willingness to design and implement innovative programs and services.
Success working closely and collaboratively with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and alumni.
This position reports to the Dean of the College of Law. The Law Library Director will be expected to give special attention to the following:
Provide direction and administrative control for developing long-range plans for the library’s collections, personnel, physical plant, and technology needs.
Stay informed about current trends in legal education and the legal profession.
Collaborate with administration to identify, evaluate, and implement law library programs and services that support the mission and goals of the College of Law to produce practice-ready graduates.
Work with library personnel to develop and support engaging programming for students.
Manage and prepare annual budgets.
Maintain familiarity with school-wide purchasing, accounting, and other financial policies and procedures, and assists in administering those policies and procedures for the library.
Build and maintain relevant collections and services to meet the law school community’s research needs, including law faculty research, scholarship, and teaching activities, in accordance with collection development policies.
Hold faculty rank commensurate with qualifications and experience, requiring teaching, scholarship, and service to the law school, the university, the legal profession, and the community.
Participate in law school governance/management.
Collaborate with the Dean in planning for annual requirements and needs of the library that further the goals of the law school.
Maintain overall responsibility for the recruitment, management, and professional development of library personnel.
Represent the library to the law school and the broader community, and coordinate functions between these groups.
Market the library activities and programs to the law school students, faculty, staff, alumni, and outside groups.
Work collectively with the DuPont Ball Library (at Stetson University) and other Stetson University departments.
The Dolly & Homer Hand Law Library:
The Dolly & Homer Hand Law Library (https://stetson.edu/law/library) is a central part of the Stetson Community, especially the students’ law school experience. As a center for student engagement, students can seek research and technology instruction, find quiet places to study, and engage in wellness activities. The library staff includes five professional librarians, an Archivist Coordinator, and six support staff. The library maintains a large print collection, as well as numerous databases and online resources, and uses Innovative Interfaces’s Sierra ILS and Encore platforms. It also houses a growing Archives Collection and utilizes ContentDM software to make this collection accessible online. The library personnel are actively engaged in scholarly activities, professional organizations, and service on and off-campus.
