Biddle Law Library is searching for a talented Associate Director for Educational Programs to join us in providing outstanding educational programming and research support at a law school that prides itself on cross-disciplinary studies.
Penn Law School has approximately 750 JD, 100 LLM, and 10 SJD students. A permanent faculty of 50+, half of whom have a PhD in addition to a JD, is deeply committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching. The School has close ties with the Wharton School, the Annenberg School for Communications, the Center for Bioethics and graduate departments such as history, philosophy and sociology. It offers several joint-degree programs. Biddle Law Library is one of the major law collections in the nation with particularly strong collections in numerous areas of American law, legal history and foreign and international law. The American Law Institute was founded at Penn in 1923, and Biddle is a repository for its archives. Philadelphia is rich in legal history, the home of the National Constitution Center and a city of many cultural opportunities.
The Associate Director for Educational Programs is responsible for designing, overseeing, and teaching, along with other librarians, the Law School’s for-credit legal research courses and the Biddle Law Library’s extensive research instruction offerings. These programs include research instruction in the first year Legal Practice Skills course, the LLM Legal Research and Writing course, Advanced Legal Research, the Master in Law online legal research course, instructional support for seminars, student journal activities, and the library’s own informal non-credit research instruction offerings. Responsibilities include designing the curriculum for the various credit and non-credit instruction programs, evaluating the success of existing instruction, overseeing the teaching provided by other librarians, and promoting instructional programs to both the faculty and students. The Associate Director of Educational Programs will work with other law school departments to identify the instructional needs of the law school’s various programs, including the Center on Professionalism, the Graduate Program, and the Legal Programs Department. The Associate Director serves as a member of the senior management team advising the Associate Dean of the library, participates on library committees and in other activities that advance the library’s mission and promote the role of the law library within the Law School, and provides reference support to a select number of faculty. The Associate Director reports directly to the Associate Dean for Biddle Law Library.
