The Michigan State University College of Law seeks candidates for a full time Reference Librarian I position. The College of Law is located in East Lansing, Michigan, with a student enrollment of over 800, and an active research-oriented faculty. The Law College’s Librarian I provides reference and research assistance and instruction to law school faculty, students, staff, and the general public. Supports library faculty services program. Serves as Adjunct Professor for the Library RWA research program. Provides high quality service for internal and external customers. Through teamwork, collaborates with other employees to achieve goals and objectives.
Under the direction of the Associate Director provides research assistance during scheduled Reference Desk shifts and in individual appointments. Supervises students and oversees library operations, including backup for Circulation Desk. May work evenings and weekends and serves as the de facto supervisor of library operations outside of regular business hours. May lead individual and group presentations and provide instruction on library resources.
Under the direction of the Associate Director, supports faculty research by assisting with all stages of faculty publication, from inception to submission. Compiles comprehensive literature searches or legal summaries, often for long-term research projects as requested by an individual faculty member. Maintains Faculty Database allowing collaboration between librarians for all activities, including processing document delivery requests, cite checking requests, and other pre-submission tasks. Under the supervision of the Associate Director, completes research surveys requested by the College Administration, contacting schools and compiling spreadsheets in addition to writing reports. Assists with training and supervision of student research assistants.
Under the direction of the Associate Director, instructs first-year law students for the research module of Research, Writing, and Advocacy. Duties include creating class materials, lecturing, and grading. Coordinates with the Writing Faculty member as needed. May assume responsibility for multiple sections.
Actively participates in local, state, and national professional organizations and conferences, monitoring professional developments for ways to enhance services.
Participates in collection development by reviewing forthcoming materials and making recommendations for purchase.
Education: J.D. and MLIS (completed or significant progress toward library science degree)
Experience: 1-2 years of law library or law practice
Ability to perform all types of legal research.
Excellent communication skills – oral and written.
Knowledge and skill in working with all types of legal databases.
Knowledge of basic office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to work independently.
Sound organizational skills and strong problem solving ability.
Ability to manage time and set priorities consistent with department and College goals.
Ability to remain focused despite frequent interruptions.
Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.
Strong interpersonal skills to work well in a team environment.
